While I can sympathize with this person’s sentiment about only changing a profile picture in hopes that it’ll magically stop child abuse, I have to strongly disagree that this act is useless. Most of these passive charity movements are aimed at raising awareness; which is where all action begins. While changing my profile picture on Facebook to Launchpad McQuack won’t stop someone from hitting their child; it will continue the conversation around child abuse and hopefully inspire someone to get involved in an active charity that is capable of real change. I don’t think these profile pictures are going to hurt the cause against child abuse, so I see no harm in doing it. Out of the 500+ Million users of Facebook, if one person gets involved in a child abuse charity because of this little act, I’d have to consider it a success on some level.
